The Battle of the Belly: Part 3

Many, many women contact me very discouraged about their bellies. It seems so many women have tried "everything" to lose their bellies. Personally, I've struggled with my belly all of my life. Pilates have made a significant impact, yet there at times, not even Pilates could help.

Hormonal balance and the belly fat.

Hormonal imbalance, particularly estrogen dominance can lead to belly fat. Personally, nothing I did got rid of the extra pounds when my hormones were amuck. As soon as I got things balanced, the weight fell off - during the Christmas holidays too boot.

Estrogen dominance, brought to our attention by the famous Dr. John Lee, is a serious hormonal imbalance that is impacting our entire culture, women and men alike, across the age span. Estrogen dominance means our normal progesterone: estrogen ratio of 4:1 is way out of whack. In fact, I've seen ratio's of 1:20. Estrogen dominance can be caused by:

1) Decreasing progesterone supply as we age

2) Xeno-estrogens (foreign estrogens) found in:

  • Birth control pills
  • Hormone replacement drugs
  • Condom spermicides
  • Conventional personal care products, particularly cosmetics
  • Plastic cookware
  • Growth hormones found in factory-farmed animal products
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • DDT
  • PCBs - polychlorinated biphenyls
  • Foaming agents in soaps and detergents

3) Being overweight

Fat is actually an incredible magnet for estrogen and visa versa. That's right. Estrogen is produced by fat cells. The more fat cells a person has, the greater chance he or she has of experiencing estrogen dominance.

4) Chronic stress  - this has been referred to as "the cortisol belly"

When a person experiences chronic physical and/or emotional stress, his or her body will begin to convert progesterone into the stress hormone, cortisol. The point is, stress can lead to a depletion of progesterone, which creates the same condition of estrogen dominance that a woman experiences when she has too much estrogen in her system.

In summary, another important component to consider in the battle of the belly is hormonal balance. If you would like a personalize hormonal assessment contact me at Lori@womenwisdomandwellnes.com
