NewslettersBalancing Our Many RolesSo- did you discover anything new about balance last week? In balancing your many roles, did you find you were being an expression of your own values? For me, it was very busy week both personally and professionally. Yet the one thing that seemed to tip me out of balance (at least for a few days) was preparing for an annual Easter concert called The Garden with the choir I am blessed to be singing in. It's an extraordinary experience being part of the cast of this production! However, we are also the crew. My job, with a few other women, was to turn a barren stage, into a luscious garden. And it was incredibly luscious - the best we've ever had.
Now, here's the point, as it related to balance. This past weekend, I (and everyone in the cast/crew) needed to produce a big result- and we did. Even though the final result can be exhilarating and satisfying, occasionally we still can get thrown out of balance when the result needed is a big one. Primitively &/or genetically men were designed to be the hunter and produce the results called food and shelter. Today, we as women find ourselves in this role in many different ways. When in the role of producing results we need "transition time". We need a transition between each and every result we produce, to reboot and even shift focus, to produce the next result. With our many roles, the result may vary from answering a phone call, doing a load of laundry, sending an email, buying groceries, changing a diaper, running a meeting, making a sales call, or producing a big holiday meal, etc. Get the picture? The transition time may be as simple as just going to the water cooler, sipping a drink, it may be looking out the window, taking a deep breath, answering a quick e-mail, or doing some stretches; yet there is always a transition. And, here's the most important point - the bigger the result, the longer the transition time required to reboot and get grounded! Did you notice this newsletter is in your box on Tuesday instead of Monday? To keep balance in your life, I hope you will start to notice and honor the transition time required for yourself and others. Take notice of the transition of the men in your life and you may even get amused as you notice patterns or rituals. To a healthy, wonderful week full of discovery! Warmest, Lori |
