NewslettersBalancing Our Many Roles Part 2 - "Zone Time"Have you ever found yourself so engrossed in one of your favorite activities that you literally missed a phone call, did not hear someone calling your name, or, did not hear the kids making noise? If so, you may have been enjoying "Zone Time" and not even have known it. Last week I shared that the hunter is single focused when producing results. In fact, single focus creates the need for transition time. The gatherer, on the other hand, has diffuse awareness to handle the many roles she may have. Diffuse (meaning pouring out in every direction) awareness brings with it many blessings - we as women can cook a multi-course meal and have it turn out all at the perfect moment. We can watch kids, clean the house, manage many tasks at work, etc. The down side of diffuse awareness is that literally our environment and the people in it seem to always be consuming our attention. It's like it's never quiet!! Zone time is a time for us to recharge, fill our tanks, and take a well deserved escape from the demands and noise of diffuse awareness. I don't know about you, but my pillows talk to me and tell me they need straightening, the floors say they need sweeping; the pile on my desk needs to be dealt with, etc. In fact, every room talks to me. ;) Zone time creates a sort of vacation from our loud environment. It is a unique wonderful time when something captures our full attention and we can float away ~~. Zone time provides a sense of timelessness, relaxation and enjoyment. There is no task to be done and you can zone out! Interestingly, zone time is the only time we naturally and easily focus. Yes, we've been trained in the world to be focused at work and produce results, yet genetically it is more difficult for most women to focus. We can, it just takes more energy than it does for men. So while we may need transition time at work, at home- we need Zone Time! So what does Zone time look like for you?
This past week, with company in town, my zone time was a day at the Georgia Zoo with my sister-in-law and 4 precious little nieces. Sometimes, it's a much smaller dose, but every time, it fills my tank, reduces my stress and cortisol, and leaves me in a better place to be my best self. To your best self! Have a great week honoring your zone time. Lori |
