Waist Watching vs Weight Watching

When I was a little girl, I remember watching my grandfather whittle away on a piece of wood, for what seemed like hours. He would create incredibly beautiful carvings with soft curves and edges. With spring officially here and summer just around the corner, many of us wish we could have someone whittle away at our body! My clients tell me they want more than just a smaller apple shaped body. In other words, whittling at the waistline to reshape their bodies. As it turns out, waist measurements are very useful from a health and wellness perspective too.

Waist measurements provide many clues on the wellness - disease continuum. In fact, these measurements provide a proxy measure to "visceral" fat. Visceral fat is the fat that surrounds our internal organs and is proportionately linked to the risk of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, formerly known as syndrome X, is receiving incredible attention in the medical community and even globally as the problem spreads to plague like status. The newest guidelines from the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute now get specific and use "waist circumference" rather than "obesity".  A Waist circumference- for women > 35 inches and for men > 40 inches is just one of 5 risk conditions. If you have any 3 of the 5 (see the link) you have metabolic syndrome.
o   Just a note, unfortunately, "the waist" that you measure is at the largest part of your abdomen, not where you button your pants!

So what's the big deal? We've measured obesity as body mass index (BMI) for years.  But, BMI while useful, does not give us the best indicator of metabolic health.  As it turns out, waist circumference correlates very well with visceral fat numbers and that is what really counts.

If you're still struggling, don't give up!! In the next few weeks I'll share information about Leptin resistance and the impact on our waist lines. More importantly, I'll share some natural solutions and tips on whittling away at your waist.

Here's to the whittled waistline!

Fondly,

Lori
