Whittling at the Waist - the Role of Leptin

I remember when I was younger (from teens, even into my early 30's) trying every fad diet that came around, to whittle at my waist. I've tried the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, the lemon juice diet, and many other crazy diets of the Hollywood stars.

Fortunately over the years there has been a great deal of science around weight/fat loss, yet there is still considerable confusion and fad diets that continue to make the front covers of magazines. This week, I'd like to share a bit about the magical hormone Leptin, and why even significant calorie restriction may be hindering your efforts at whittling.

Our Bodies Design

Do you know that our body actually has over 230 genes that are designed to keep us fat? OK, they are really to protect us from starving, yet it's quite evident in our modern world that our days of famine are over. However, your brain may not know that. Do you know that our brain actually communicates with our fat cells? Or rather it tries to. Unfortunately our lifestyle and eating habits have wreaked havoc for some of us.

Leptin is a hormone that is stored in our white adipose tissue- our fat cells. Its role is to communicate with our brain and tell us that we have enough fuel (fat) in storage for survival or it's safe to burn the excess fuel. When everything is in balance, this helps us maintain a healthy weight and body fat composition. Leptin will also tell our brain that we are satisfied and satiated, yet when out of balance can also be the source of some rather erratic and bizarre cravings.

Balance is the Key

Our Super Size Me  culture of large portions can tip our Leptin out of balance. The fat cells just get bigger and store more fat. With it comes more Leptin, or a louder signal to the brain. Similar to insulin resistance that causes Diabetes, your brain can become resistant to the Leptin hormone signal too. Just think of noise that you've been exposed to - over time, you are kind of numb to it. I like the analogy of cell phones too. When we-and the caller on the other end-have 4 bars, there is a good chance we can hear each other. You know what can happen when the bars start getting smaller. The reception can be sketchy at best, communication can be faulty, or even drop at worst. This can happen with Leptin. With Leptin resistance, our non-conscious brain can not tell that we have plenty of fat in storage. Instead, it thinks we are in a state of famine and tells our body to store more fat! No wonder it's hard to lose those inches, even when we restrict our calories. In fact, when we start to restrict our calories our brain may be thinking "there she goes again, trying to starve me to death". As a result, Leptin and other genes kick into high gear trying to protect us from starving ourselves.

So now what? There are some great resources today to educate you on Leptin, yet the newest natural solution that I recommend to help restore Leptin balance and burn fat, is Bios Life Slim. Next week I will share more information on this natural, non-stimulatory, fat loss formulation, soon to be released, to the general market. In the interim, if you're hungry for more information and missed my recent interview, you can listen here.

To feeling and looking great!

Fondly,

Lori
