Whittling at Your Waist - America's Biggest Losers

The Today Show did a special on April 25 discussing the staggering results of Self Magazine's new study on American women. The study says that six out of 10 American women are "disordered eaters."  Overeating and obesity are an exploding sector of eating disorders.

Perhaps you've been watching (or at least seen the ads) for NBC's riveting reality show The Biggest Loser. The "losers" transformed their bodies, and their lives!! And just as importantly, they gave the gift of their health to their loved ones. While Ali was this years biggest loser (losing 112 lbs and 47% of her weight), the intergenerational teams touched me the most. Mother and son team - Jackie and Dan - were amazing together. Jackie losing 36% and Dan 43.8%!

Why is this so important? Obesity and metabolic syndrome is an intergenerational phenomenon. Pediatric obesity has reached its way into every ethnic group and every class in America. A study conducted in 1999-2002 found that approximately 16 percent of young people 6 to 19 years old were overweight. What must the numbers be today, just 6 years later?  With lifestyle behaviors and health habits shaped in the home, it must be addressed early. Metabolic syndrome is the precursor to our number one killer of men and women (cardiovascular disease) and our fasting growing disease (diabetes).  We, as women, need to learn all we can about healthy eating and overcoming the growing epidemic of metabolic syndrome, if not for ourselves, to save our young!!   Obesity in children, like adults, is a predictor of metabolic syndrome.  Jackie and Dan were able to break this cycle and transform their lives and their health - together!!!!   YEA!!!

Research has shown that the younger one can shed the pounds and correct the metabolic disorders (obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems) the greater the compounded effect and longer, healthier life. The bottom line - healthy is a habit. Not an event. If you or your children are struggling with metabolic syndrome, feel free to contact me for additional information and tools to support your own healthy transformations!!

Fondly,

Lori
